On the Night of the Museums occasion, on May 13, between 18:00 and 23:30, Brukenthal National Museum invited general public to visit the Great Synagogue of Sibiu (Str. Constituției, No. 11), a building that is not included in the usual tourist circuit.
If in 1949, the Jewish community in Sibiu numbered 1,900 people, in 1966 there were 211 people left in the city and in 2006 only 24. In these conditions, the Synagogue in Sibiu, one of the few places of worship for the Jewish community in Transylvania, fallen into disrepair, the most important gold and silver cult objects being stolen. For the year 2007, Sibiu European Cultural Capital, Rodica Gordon Radian, Israel's Ambassador to Romania, initiated the rehabilitation program of the building with funds allocated by the government of the State of Israel.
On the occasion of the event, the synagogue was visited by more than 12,000 people.
